Joost Verbakel (1987) is a versatile Rotterdam-based bass player who began playing the double bass at eight and hasn’t stopped since. With a light-hearted, professional attitude, his sound always serves what the music needs, making him a sought after musician across a variety of styles. 

After studying classical and jazz double bass (with a minor in bass guitar) at the Conservatories of Rotterdam and Tilburg, Joost has performed with a wide range of orchestras, bands and ensembles, such as het DoelenEnsemble, Philharmonie Zuid, Het Zeeuws Orkest, Marit Thus, Frank Windemuller, Orkest Koninklijke Marechaussee, Kamerata Zuid and many others. These collaborations span everything from classical orchestral and contemporary chamber pieces to jazz, blues and even more electronic focused music. Known for his ability to blend different genres, Joost enjoys exploring the intersections between classical traditions, chamber music and more contemporary genres in jazz and composed music. His work is characterized by a thoughtful approach to both performance and composition.

Recently, Joost has been exploring composition, working on his own musical pieces as he seeks to develop his distinct voice and express his own musical ideas. His first single “GLOW” is available on most streaming platforms.

In addition to performing, Joost enjoys teaching and sharing his knowledge with others.
